The race to be top goalscorer in the Premier League this season looks like it could be the most exciting it has been for years, with at least six top class strikers all in with a realistic chance of winning the coveted Golden Boot.
The main protagonists are Romelu Lukaku of Manchester United, Spurs’ Harry Kane, Sergio Agüero and Gabriel Jesus of Man City, Chelsea’s Álvaro Morata, and Alexandre Lacazette from Arsenal.
Currently leading the way is Romelu Lukaku with 7 goals. Anybody with any football industry insight will know that Lukaku will surely have far more goal scoring opportunities created for him while playing for Manchester United, although at this stage of his career, I see him as more of an Andy Cole, than an Alan Shearer.
That may sound critical, but I just don’t see Lukaku as the one chance, one goal, man, just yet. He seems to miss a lot of chances, before he finally puts one away. That said, when Cole arrived at Old Trafford he was his own finished article, whereas Lukaku has plenty of room for improvement, and will only get better as he further develops his career at Old Trafford.
Despite all the chances that will no doubt be presented to Lukaku over the course of the season, and him also being the current leader of the pack, Lukaku is only second favourite at odds of 11/4.
The current favourite is Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur. Kane is in the midst of an incredible run of goal scoring in all competitions. He is currently sitting in second place on 6 Premier League goals, and this is without even managing to score in the month of August.
Since the start of September though, he hasn’t been able to stop scoring. In total Kane scored 13 goals in 8 matches in September, that includes Champions League goals and Premier League goals for Tottenham, and he even managed to be the only bright spot in a couple of dismal England performances over the recent international break, scoring twice in two games to save England manager Gareth Southgate from even more criticism last weekend (he also scored 2 against Malta at the start of September).
It’s probably why Kane is the favourite with the bookmakers to be the top goalscorer in the Premier League this season, he is currently 7/4, slightly ahead of Lukaku in the betting.
Next comes the Manchester City pair of Sergio Agüero and Gabriel Jesus. Agüero currently has 6 goals, but is out injured at the moment with broken ribs, sustained in a car crash in Amsterdam a couple of weeks back. He is currently available to back as 7/1.
His team mate, Gabriel Jesus is 9/1 (currently on 4 goals). Although a betting looking all round footballer, Jesus doesn’t look as clinical in front of goal as the likes of Morata, Kane, and Agüero, but playing in a Manchester City side that will create numerous chances, he can’t be dismissed as a candidate. It’s no wonder Manchester City are favourites in this season for Premier League Betting with these two strikers at their disposal.
Another strong candidate is Álvaro Morata of Chelsea. Morata has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water, scoring 6 goals so far this season. Unfortunately for the Spaniard, he picked up an injury in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City and looks set to be out for a few weeks. At the moment Morata can be backed at 14/1.
Sneaking up on the inside is Alexandre Lacazette. Arsenal seem to have been written off in all quarters of the media so far this season, but while no one is talking about them, Lacazette is quietly
